Davin Cai (b. 2003) is a percussionist who unifies different musical settings through finding meaningful human experiences with unapologetic emotion. Highlights include performances at Carnegie Hall, the Percussive Arts Society International Convention (PASIC), and winning the 2024 Drum Corps International World Championships with the Bluecoats in a show nationally recognized by the New York Times as one that "just might live forever".
His identity as a musician has strong roots in the marching arts, where he gained invaluable skills as a rudimental drummer, technical marimbist, and confident performer; playing for countless packed stadiums and arenas. Further accolades in this area include the 2022 Fred Sanford Percussion Caption award, as well as numerous Finals appearances at the Winter Guard International World Championships with Monarch Independent.
More recently, Davin has explored diverse musical ventures around Austin, premiering his own work with the University of Texas Percussion Ensemble, performing with the Austin Percussion Collective and the University of Texas Wind Ensemble under the direction of Jerry Junkin, and arranging music for his band woodwork; blending together an unorthodox instrumentation of oboe, marimba, asalato, and electronics to the acclaim of classical and non-classical audiences alike. An advocate for contemporary music, he has premiered music by composers such as Hila Plitmann, Katahj Copley, and Hunter Prueger. Versatile across genres, Davin is equally at home performing in the concert hall or in live music venues such as Laguna Gloria and Monks Jazz.
Davin is currently pursuing his M.M. in Percussion Performance from the Peabody Institute of the Johns Hopkins University, studying with Ian Rosenbaum, Jisu Jung, Jeff Stern, and Sandbox Percussion. He received his B.M. in Music Education from the University of Texas at Austin under the instruction of Thomas Burritt and Ivan Trevino.
